Visual Art

Welcome to Visual Arts at Southwest High School.  There is always something interesting going on in our Art room!

Please check in our 'files' area to review the NC Essential Standards for Visual Arts 9-12. Please be assured that our level of instruction will remain rigorous and your children will benefit from an innovative curriculum that emphasizes high standards and personalized learning for each child.

I believe that students benefit from solid instruction in traditional art techniques, such as drawing and painting, as well as newer media such as digital photography and digital imaging.  And no, you don't have to be able to "draw well" to succeed in Art.  Often students have apprehensively taken their first Art course here at SWHS, concerned because they felt like they couldn't draw or paint.  Most of these previously apprehensive students found out that they could indeed draw and paint skillfully with specific training and practice. Many also excelled in Color & Design or the Digital Arts. These same students learned to be confident in their own creativity and artistic abilities.

I have been teaching in Onslow County schools for over 25 years; 20 of those years have been happily spent here at Southwest High. I earned my Bachelors Degree in Art Education from Meredith College in Raleigh, NC and my Master's Degree from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. I am Nationally Board certified in Adolescent/Young Adult Art.
