Southwest Tops Swain County for 4th State Football Championship

Southwest High School added another state football championship to the program's storied history with a 44-34 win over Swain County on Saturday, Dec. 1 at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh. Junior J'Veon Walker earned MVP honors with a two-touchdown, nine-tackle performance for Coach Phil Padgett's Stallions, who have now won four state championships.  Senior quarterback Shak Pershey and junior running back DaMonta Winbush led Southwest in rushing with 140 yards and 123 yards, respectively.  Senior Joseph Holmes notched 13 tackles to lead the Stallion defense.

Stallions Earn Trip to 1-AA State Championship

The Southwest football team is back in the state championship game following a 35-13 win over the James Kenan Tigers.  The Stallions (13-1) will face the defending state champion Maroon Devils of Swain County (15-0) on Saturday, December 1 at 3 p.m. at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh.  It is Southwest's sixth trip to a state championship game, having won three previous titles.

Tickets for the game may be purchased in advance at the Sotuhwest High School office.  The price is $9.

Stallions Back in 1-AA East Final

The Southwest football team will make its third appearance in four years in the 1-AA East Regional Final this Friday, thanks to a big game against Northampton High School in the 4th round of the NCHSAA Playoffs.  Junior DaMonta Winbush ran for 118 yards and senior Nicholas Matics kicked two field goals en route to a 50-6 victory over the visting Jaguars.  Next up for the Stallions is a journey to James Kenan High School with a trip to the 2012 State Championship on the line.  The Stallions last appeared in the regional final in 2010 after making it all the way to the 2009 state title game.
