Advanced Studies, Visual Arts I, Visual Arts II, Visual Arts III, Visual Arts IV

I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Art Education at Meredith College in Raleigh, NC and a Master's of Art Education degree at East Carolina University. I am a National Board Certified teacher in Adolescent/Young Adult Art.

I've been teaching in Onslow County schools since August of 1991. I began my career at Southwest Middle School the year it opened. I taught Visual Arts at SWMS for 4 years and then moved across the street to Southwest High School. I've been teaching at Southwest High for 20 years.

People always ask me why I stay here. I reply "You stay where the love is..." I'm very blessed to work in a place where we are like an extended family. When I ask my students what is their favorite thing about Southwest High School, most of them respond with "The strong sense of family here."

Although I'm originally from Texas (Panhandle area near Amarillo), I grew up in Hampstead, NC. I've lived in Onslow County for almost 25 years. I'm married to a retired Marine, James Otero, and have 3 children. My oldest son graduated from SWHS and later graduated from UNCW and now lives in Wilmington. My younger children are students at New Bridge Middle School. I have two of the cutest yorkies you've ever seen (Athena & Zeus ;-).

Of course, I love all things associated with Art (especially painting) and I'm a devoted bookworm. I read entirely too much, every chance I get. I love to garden, especially flowers that attract birds and butterflies. Because of growing up on the Intercoastal waterway in Hampstead, I have a lifelong love of all things associated with our local salt water and easy-going coastal lifestyle.
